This was unexpected

I forgot about this – I ran across this pic flicking through my photos just now. I took it on my birthday this year, when we dined at my favorite fish and chips restaurant.

You might wonder what an altarpiece is doing in a fish and chips shop. I did, so I asked. The owner saw a crew demolishing a church and spotted it. He asked for it, they gave it to him. Cornwall, I think it was.

I believe it’s granite, late 19th C. It props up a bookshelf now; probably some kind of sacrilege.

Speaking of sacrilege – I’m about to make a quiche Lorraine from scratch for the first time. Thoughts and prayers, please.

As indicated by your rasslin boast there in the side bar, you are a girl…

Therefore you can eat quiche and none may complain.
It is alleged to be the ‘gold standard” for quiche and alleged to be the reason Americans fell in love with quiche.

Don’t fret over the quiche. Just use good heavy cream, fresh eggs, and put the cooked bacon on paper towels to absorb the extra grease before shredding it. And don’t be afraid to use a bit more bacon than called for. Use real Gruyere cheese and fresh ground pepper. You can soften the onions in the skillet a bit first if you want too, to get some moisture out of them.

If making your own pie crust do not use one of those vodka crusts. They shrink like mad. If you use a premade store bought crust, even the “deep dish” ones are undersized. Usually it works out that 3 crusts will handle 2 recipes worth of the filling. As if there is a thing as too much quiche.

Oh, and most importantly: check your oven to make sure the racks are level, and put a large baking sheet under the pie pans. Cleaning up baked on overflow is no fun at all. I top off my quiches once they’re in the oven, using a long handled large serving spoon. They go in the oven only about half full, to minimize sloshing.

I once ordered a quiche pronouncing the ‘Q’, in a restaurant, and the nice lady said, ‘Keech.’ and I insisted it was ‘Quince.’ I got what want I wanted however it is pronounced.

I do know how to pronounce Worcestershire sauce.

If it was in a fish and chips place (think Arthur Treachery’s), I believe it is more like a snackrilege.

Quiche Lorraine makes a splendid winter picnic. Add a thermos of hot coffee, and fresh baked cookies, and someone who loves you will think you are a genius. Bake the cookies first. 🙂

So, by now it’s cooked and at least partially consumed…

How was it!????!!!!

Retired guy likes to cook (and eat).

Quiche is my “leftover dump” meal. Quiche is easy…it’s one/one/one+stuff. That is one egg/one cup milk (I use cream)/one cup grated cheese. I use any veg or leftover meat I need to clean out of the fridge or freezer. We had fajitas when the niece+family were here last week. The leftovers became skirt steak, pepper+onions, homemade pico de Gallo quiche with the leftover Monterey Jack cheese. We had friends for dinner last night. Tomorrow’s quiche is leftover steak, mushrooms with shallots, asparagus and the leftover grated parm and provolone mix I made for the toast points.

So over there in England, there are so many carved stone altar pieces, those builders were ready to toss it? And a lucky passerby was able to get it for free?

Do Brits ever think this stuff is valuable and could be sold on to people in other countries for a good profit? Don’t Brits remember selling the London Bridge to Arizona?

I watch GBNews and all I hear is how the govt is running out of money to pay for the NHS. And that guy who diddled some 15 year old on a TV show. And oh yeah, Harry. You guys need some entrepreneurs is all.
