Rather interesting article today on Going Postal about Tollund Man.

Actually, the article is about an old archaeology series on the BBC, available via iPlayer, which I haven’t watched myself yet. You might be able to watch it for your ownself if your VPN is set to the UK and you swear you’re British and have paid for a TV license.

They do ask. Yes we have :(

Anyway, among the revelations are horned helmets. I’m sure I’ve always read there were no horned helmets in antiquity.

Changing the subject, I’ve had a good look at Google Images headshots and I don’t think Possum Lady is Porno Lady. I think they both used a common theatrical alias and when Possum lady discovered this – lovable scamp that she is – she leaned into it.

Right. I brought some work home. If I don’t want to booger my Saturday, I better hop to it. Have a good weekend!

She wasn’t the news dear, Dilly was.

Dilly, that scamp. Something she said probably drove him to become a ‘girl’, or the inane imaginary version of a girl someone like Theodore Cleaver or Dennis the Menace might think of as a girl.

Then again, there don’t seem to be any girls/women left, it’s not clear what these creatures who are NOTmen are, but according to the authorities they are not girls/women.

Hmmm – I was curious about the horned helmet thing, so after watching ExpressoBold’s cat video 😉 I did a googley search and found out that the spin nowadays is:

“Yeah, well, okay, there were people running around horned helmets but they totally weren’t Vikings so we were acktually right, so there!”

https://www.popsci.com/science/viking-horns-truth/

…horned helmets did exist in northern Europe—but they predated the Vikings by at least 2,000 years. They’re products of a Bronze Age culture that predates written records in the region.”

Let’s see if we can start a silly ‘net thing-a-meme-bob, sit back, and watch it go viral. I’m thinking “Vikings ACTUALLY wore propellor beanies with antlers!”

Damn that bogged-down Tollund Man… in the comments I allowed myself to be lured into a long form tweet (X-planation) which discusses &.

Right, because no guy would ever decorate his helmet with horns to add a little zing to his helmet and try and scare his foe spitless. Nope.

And no army would ever wear shakos or bearskin hats to make themselves look taller, and no one ever decorated themselves with war paint or tatoo themselves to scare their enemies….

For example, the haka from above was only made after television became a available because we haven’t found video evidence from the 1600s.
The Polish Winged Hussars who routed the Turks at Vienna didn’t wear those wings to frighten their enemies, they wore them because they thought if they galloped fast enough they might fly.
Really.
