He was a very little giant

It was a weekend of flower festivals. There were four at least within our usual travel range. We went to two.

One was at Brede, where I got to visit my old friend the Brede Giant. He was a real man, but not a real giant. If he was ever in this tomb, I make him 5’6″ tops. They did call him the Giant of Brede within his lifetime, though, so who knows why.

I wrote more about his legend here (13 years ago? Have I really been cruising the flower festivals that long?).

Well, good old Bob Barker has kicked the bucket. Barker was 1/8 Sioux and grew up on an Indian reservation. Congratulations to RushBabe (you better be right about that, Uncle Al – I haven’t double checked). You know the drill!

You don’t really need to be Native American to claim you’re Native American. Check the ETHICS professor in Crapifornia who retired with pension after lying about being a Native American for 15 years. Or the ever popular lying ass Senator, Harvard Professor from Massachusetts who “has high cheekbones” and lied for years about being a Native American and suffering zero repercussion.

Barker was no doubt the real thing.

I’m at least 1/8th indian (Blackfoot, supposedly), maybe even 1/4. Depends if my maternal grandmother was full indian or only half. We’ll never know, though, as the birth documents went up in a fire at the courthouse.

Oh, well, it doesn’t really matter – it was only good for a drinking story, back in my drinking days.

On the “Brede Giant”:
“Thought to be seven feet tall, Sir Goddard Oxenbridge lived at the Oxenbridge family home, Brede Place, and was known locally as “The Brede Giant” abd “Tghe Sussex Ogre”. During his lifetime, there was a rumour, which possibly emanated from a servant who had gained Sir Goddard’s displeasure, that Sir Goddard was invulnerable to metal weapons, only wooden ones could kill him, and that he ate a child every night for his supper.”

Quite an interesting chap.

Beware: more than one link in a comment is apt to earn you a trip to the spam filter, where you will remain -- cold, frightened and alone -- until I remember to clean the trap. But, hey, without Akismet, we'd be up to our asses in...well, ass porn, mostly.
