Huh. Things I didn’t realize I wanted.
The auction house we bought that bookcase from is currently running an auction entirely of Vinaigrettes, Snuff Boxes and Vesta Cases. So much pretty silver.
A vinaigrette – if you didn’t know, and I had to look it up – is a little silver box with a grill. Under the grill is a sponge and onto the sponge you’d soak – vinegar, I suppose. Something to hold up to your delicate nose because the olden days stank.
I can absolutely see how these things would be collectibles. I love engraving…

I believe that a Vesta case would be to hold wooden matches, which I believe were called “wax vestas”.

Match fights with (50+ years ago) Diamond brand strike anywheres.skipping at each other on pavenent.
They were quite, uh, flammable.
Don’t get me started on the dam eco green strike on the box kind in a humid environment…
I can see vestas, we used match boxes, cheap tin ones with a bit of sandpaper glued on them when we pretended to be living in 1863. Finer folks would certainly have had fancy matchboxes.
And yeah, matches are indispensable when you don’t have electricity. Especially after sunset, or when you’re lighting your pipe.
