Well, that’s boring

We had friends in Alfriston at one time. We loved going there. It had an interesting high street and lots of places to shop.

And this thing in the public parking lot. It’s old. It’s an object of mystery. Some thought it was a temporary lockup for criminals. Some thought it was the lower part of a windmill. Some suggested it was a kiln. You’d think there’d be records, but there are not.

Well, according to this BBC article, it’s a dovecote. Boring.

You know what? I’m not sure I believe it. There are no holes for the pigeons to get in, just that one shuttered window at the top. And you think there would be evidence of ancient droppings.

I’m re-declaring it a mystery object.

Submit the edifice to WC21, Amateur Antiquarian… he’ll seek it out on old maps and texts produced by other antiquarians in previous generations.

Looks like an ancient phone booth. Write your message, pick your pigeon, let it fly.

Let it fly, wait for six hours for it to come back.

Then there’s a guy outside the door jumping up-and-down because he has to send a pigeon, too.

It looks like a gate house to me.

Apparently, it was originally a dovecote but people modified it over the years.

Great view of the Cuckmere meander from High and Over just south of Alfriston.

My wife tells me that a GI in WW2, looking at a signpost in the area, was heard to say “Cuckfield left, Uckfield right. What a joint!”.

We had tea in Alfriston last year (the Singing Kettle) when we were staying in Lindfield and doing day trips. It’s a lovely little village.
