Opinion, please

Is this what you call a mackerel sky? Because both Uncle B and I think it is, but the robot says: “In traditional weather lore it signals approaching change, usually rain or unsettled weather within roughly 6–24 hours.”

Google Images search thinks it is, too, but there’s absolutely no change predicted for our weather for days and days.

Also
“Mackerel sky, not twenty-four hours dry.”
And
“Mackerel sky, mackerel sky — never long wet and never long dry.”
And
“Mares’ tails and mackerel scales make tall ships carry low sails.”

Phooey.

A mackerel sky is a term for clouds made up of rows of cirrocumulus or altocumulus clouds displaying an undulating, rippling pattern similar in appearance to fish scales;[1][2] this is caused by high altitude atmospheric waves.[3] – wikipedia

Looks like scales to me.

They took some sky pictures in California, the clouds looked like tentacles…lots of weird stuff going on in the sky these days.

I call that a Wool Sweater Mega-Pill Sky.

Actually, those are alto-cumulus clouds and the phenomenon is indeed frequently called a mackerel sky. Your photo shows discrete small clouds, but it’s still a mackerel when they form parallel lines that look (to me) more like a salmon steak.

p.s. You usually see alto-cum like that only when the winds aloft are very light and there’s zero wind shear.

When we get them here they’re tighter. This is like maybe a scaled mackerel?
