Can I just say something…?

Gleaned from a lifetime of experience, you do NOT mouth off to a cop in front of witnesses. You will surely be arrested for disorderly conduct if you do. Are most cops way the hell too macho and thin-skinned? Yes. Is this a terrible injustice? Yes. Sure. Whatever.

A white cop will arrest a white man for being mouthy.
A black cop will arrest a white man for being mouthy.
A black cop will arrest a black man for being mouthy.
So it’s sure as shit not news when a white cop arrests a
black man for being mouthy
.

Word.

First Corollary of Mouthing off to a Cop: If you are “caught” breaking into your own home, be prepared to immediately show your personal identification.

Apparently, the cop is preparing to sue the guy for defamation, and the Cambridge police are getting ready to release the audiotape of the incident to support him.

*insert any color* cop will also arrest *insert any color* leftist elite Harvard professor for being mouthy.

And THAT is the terrible injustice we see before us.

Stupid cop doesn’t know his place.

I wonder what percentage of perceived racism is a result of black people grossly overestimating how nice white people are to each other.

I think Gates should be charged with a ‘hate crime’!

Yeah, that’s the ticket.

Probably quite a bit. I’m reminded of an old Eddie Murphy SNL skit where he went disguised as a white person to observe how they behaved when black people weren’t around. Needless to say it was always a big party the instant all the black people left the room. It was funny, but also kinda sad because you know there are those who think that skit isn’t really all that far from “the truth”.

And didn’t Hermione grow up fast?

You know that Gates is out of control when Salon posts an anonymous article from a black academic telling Gates to Shut The Fuck Up.

Comment from S. Weasel

I read that, JeffS. My only quarrel with Mr Anonymous — and several other black commenters who’ve made the same point — is above: they don’t seem to realize a white person giving shit to a cop would absolutely get nicked, too. Even a white person of obvious wealth and influence — think Zsa Zsa Gabor.

You simply Do Not Give a Cop Shit. You can bitch all you want about living in a police state — later.

Eh. I didn’t intend for this to be my only post today, but that’s how it worked out. Good weekend, all!

No argument, Weez. And you are entirely correct. I learned that a loooonnnngggg time ago, and I’m mostly WASP (does Scandinavian, French, and German count as WASP? I’ve never thought so, so I emphasize the “W”). I *never* give a police officer any lip, even when I think he or she is a class A jerk — and there are more than a few out there. But any argument with a cop must be fought in the system, up to and including the courts. Anything else is a lost cause from the start.

I’m looking at it from Gates pathetic “Bro, I’m a victim!” shtick. If I could, I’d say to Gates, “No, dude, you are NOT a victim. You’re an idiot, and even your bro’s think so, so sit down and shut up.”

Gates is a victim of discrimination all right. In his favor. See Harvard’s admissions and hiring policies.

Hm. Just because someone is a preeminent scholar and academic doesn’t necessarily mean that he has impressive life skills or a good grasp of how the world works outside his personal specialty. I suspect most white academics, especially in the more exalted schools, would have reacted the same way to a police officer questioning their right to break into their own homes.

I’m not defending Gates–without having been there, it is impossible to know what provocation there was on either side, and it certainly does seem to me that one should understand why the police showed up in those circumstances–indeed, I’d probably go thank the neighbor who phoned it in (if for no other reason than to assure that in future s/he’d know it was me breaking in). I just suspect that a lot of white academics would have reacted with equal belligerence. . .

My brother was a cop on 3 different local departments. The one thing he always told us was that, even for a traffic stop, you want to be THE MOST FORGETTABLE person the cop sees that day (preferably that month). Of course no lip, but also includes being obsequious or overly friendly/familiar. Particularly with a traffic ticket, ’cause if you decide to fight it and the cop has no memory of you, there’s a chance he won’t even show up in court. And that’s regardless of color, gender or any other delineator you can think of. Politely minimalist is the way to go.

The first part can’t be much of a secret – it appears to be shared by most of the population of the UK!

The Gates thing is insane – it hasn’t really had much mainstream press over here (apart from CiF, where they had about 5-6 articles on it so far), so I’ve had to read most of it from the US press.

It would probably have blown over by now – or at least, be confined to the local news and lawyers and racehustlers and cops unions and all that happy fun – if Obama hadn’t opened his trap…

Respectfully, you people (no, not that type of “you people”) are all missing the point: how incredibly sto-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-pid is The Boy King for having waded into this thing — especially after prefacing his remarks at the press confeence by saying something to the effect “now, I don’t know all of the facts, but..”

Then this dolt compounds the matter with his “uncalibrated” non-apology. The man is has no capacity for strategic thought.

..and you thought Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi were dumb.

I knew Harry Potter was a poofter. I just knew it. I said to Mabel, I says, ‘There’s something about that Harry Potter’ to which Mabel replied, ‘Mm-hmm. He’s one of those isn’t he?’ ‘Yes’ I said. ‘One of those types.‘ Then we tutted for a bit and went on to talk about Mrs. Smith in number 38 who’s just gone into hospital to have her ovaries removed.

Hmmm…you think he really is a poofter? My daughter is at the theatre, as I type, watching Harry Potter. She will be sooo disappointed.

Says he is dating some chick, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything.

Who is Mrs. Smith and why should we care about her ovaries?

Gibby, you’re only a year or two older than I, right? (I’m 26.) Your cranky old codger act is very true-to-life, though.

pnb, Mrs. Smith’s ovaries are important because the New Jersey Democrats might be trafficking in them.
