Woo-woo!

model

Went to a model railway exhibition this weekend. By British standards, there weren’t that many layouts, but I enjoyed it.

I have a soft spot for miniature things. That’s why I adored Barbie — all those tiny kitchen utensils and accessories. My parents were pleased to see me do something girlie; if they bought me baby dolls that did anything interesting, I generally dissected them to see how they worked. I didn’t have the heart to tell them I’d have been just as happy with GI Joe and his tiny weapons.

(My friend had the GI Joe with the peachfuzz buzzcut and beard. I wanted that thing so bad).

Old hands might recall that my birthday is in May and I celebrate it pretty much for the entire month. I’m taking some time off work this week and next, but I will be turning up to post. Tiny weak posts.

Lazy, low-effort shit-posting — my weaselbirthday gift to you!

How about Chatty Cathy? Or, Crissy with the button on her belly and her hair grew? Those were dolls that did something.

Alas, I can no longer eat ice cream, my favorite food. It gives me the runs which I assume means lactose intolerance. I didnt know you could develop it as an adult. Sure, I can eat ice cream but on the toilet which is not that appealing. 🙁

ps: Toy trains are good for torturing pets tho when it comes down to train vs pet — Fluffy/Sparky always wins.

Billy Blastoff was my favourite…all those gadgets that his little backpack could drive!

I envied the Addams Family train layout. Then again, I was probably Wednesday Addams anyway…

Rich fan, same here…chemo has zapped my lactate persistence gene of late, which is very distressing to me. No cheese, butter, yogurt, nuthin. It sucks.

But happy birthday month to Stoaty regardless!

I’m partial to miniatures, too. Polly the Pocket Dolly’s accessories were even smaller than Barbie’s, very cute.

Happy Weaselbirthday!

“if they bought me baby dolls that did anything interesting, I generally dissected them to see how they worked.”

A friend once spoke in delight of watching a dragonfly perched on the back of her wrist as it cut up and devoured a small insect it had caught. I said to her, as I now say to you “There is no chance of your ever being mistaken for a normal woman.”

Well, maybe at a distance, beyond range of the Odd vibes.

Like most boy kids, I was into plastic models: the Aurora monsters, of course, but before that birds and other animals, and later cars, sailing ships, WWII subs, and German tanks. In the early ’80s I bought and painted two of the small lead figures (well, about 4.5″ high), a Roman centurion (who somehow came out looking like John Wayne) and Conan’s Red Sonya (who wound up looking hot, as she should).

In my kitchen closet I have an eBay purchase, a Pyro model kit of a cowboy with saddle on his shoulder, from 1959 or so. I bought it because the first model my mother ever built and painted for me, when I was about six, was that one. If I ever have a study where I can set the model and its supplies to work on it without the cats interrupting, I’ll tackle it. And of course I still have the Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin Aurora model kits in their boxes. So I understand about miniature goodies.

Happy birthday, Stoaty. Perhaps I should do the same as you, and encompass the entire month of August for my birthday . . .?

BTW, I’m an October baby…well, me and my twin are October babies. As my parents told the story, they decided to leave the squaling 4 month old with the German nanny and took the train to Paris. There, in some left bank pension, after a few bottles of wine, my brother and I came to be. My folks stood on a staircase in Montmartre and had their picture taken….the first picture of my twin and I! 15 years later, when the squaling 4 month old and I were in Paris for a couple of weeks, we stumbled upon this beautiful staircase in Montmartre and had our picture taken. When the film was developed my mama laughed and laughed and then found the picture of her and daddy standing in the exact same place! She has both of those pictures framed side by side today.

That’s a great story, AB! Best that it’s true, too!
