Disassemble, clean, check working order. If barrel is worn, replace and check headspace.
Obtain bayonnet – learn how to use it.

Learn to shoot with both appertures. Sight for 100 meters, and check at 500 meters. Open loop will suffice to 50 m.
Load with 150 grain, and lite loads. You can fit a rubber pad to the stock to prevent recoil.
You can cast lead bullets for a 303, and power them with home made black powder.
Try that with an AR!

Yeah. Actually, I have a great deal of respect for the old SMLE. One of my greater regrets for firearms purchases is passing on an Indian SMLE that had been rechambered for 7.62 NATO. It was over 20 years ago, and I could have gotten several for less than $100 each.

Besides the ballistics, in hard times one will always be able to acquire both 7.62 and 5.56 NATO one way or another. At least in this country.

For all our antipodean troll complains about the 5.56; I note that the all conquering New Zealand Army issues the Steyr AUG bullpup Mattel toy in 5.56 as their standard “rifle”.
