Here we go — whee…!

Thanks to the various pre-Christmas sales, I’ve got a glut of unplayed games waiting for my attention but, goshdarnit, I enjoyed Far Cry 3 so much, I’m playing it through again. Just the really fun bits.

Should I worry that my “really fun bits” were finding a comfy perch on a high hillside and picking off pirates with a heavily modified sniper rifle? Mmmmmmnah.

Anyway, I declare the holidays officially begun. Expect blogging to be light and lame for the duration. That’s my promise to you!

Good weekend, and let ‘er rip!

Yeah, I’m trying to make some time to play some of my piled up games…work has been very busy.

I got Far Cry 3 with my graphics card upgrade…I don’t think shooters are really my thing…I just want to wander around and check out the cool scenery but they are *constantly* interrupting you with game play :+)

My favourite game I’ve played over the past year was Defense Grid…a tower defense type game…that’s more my kind of thing…just got Defense Grid 2 and am hoping to play it over the holidays.

I hear Alien: Isolation is pretty good…might get that one when it goes on sale cuz I like the Alien movies.

Wait, is that an SKS/AK-47 with a scope on it?

No, Stark. Not sure what it is, but my *other* gun is an AK-47 🙂

Wait, hang on. I’ve just remembered — this isn’t my screenshot. I knicked it off the internets. I don’t know what that thing is.

Well, that looks quite a lot like the rear cover on an AK-47, & the thought of putting a scope on an AK-47 makes me giggle. Like those kids who put the big old grapefruit shooter exhausts on their mom’s old Civic.

I have never understood why anyone would want an AK. But then, my 7.62 rifle is an HK.

I don’t want no beauty queen,
I just want my M-14.

Today there will be a magic show at 0930.
Chaplain Charlie will explain to you maggots how Castro Brothers will conquer the free world with the help of a Murkan prezedunt and a few mujahedeenes.
God has a hard-on for Castro Brothers, because they conquer everything they see. In appreciation of so much power, the Murkan Prezedunt will grant a full unconditional submission so that no ebil blue eyed oppressors will ever own a farm and tractor.

I have never understood why anyone would want an AK.

The basic appeal is (or used to be) extremely cheap & fairly reliable. As a military rifle, it has very little need for accuracy since military use is generally 100,000+ rounds fired per casualty. I mean, if you can hit the outer rings of a target at 50yds 50% of the time, you’re good to go.

But yeah, for things like hunting & personal defense it’s a terrible weapon.

Since things are starting to seriously unravel over here you’re better off in Jolly ol’ England. Keep sharp your shootin’ skills…we may need you back to help fight off the anarchists…they’re everywhere. Thanks Obama…

Actually, highly reliable. The AK was intentionally designed with loose tolerances so it wouldn’t jam on a little bit of grit or dirt and wouldn’t require continual thorough maintenance to keep firing. In fact it is designed to keep firing in spite of gross abuse.

But yeah, for things like hunting & personal defense it’s a terrible weapon.

It can reliably hit a dishplate target out to 100 meters. How often do hunters fire past that range? As for personal defense, it’s cheap – which means it’s available – and accurate out to any range that’s remotely probable in a self-defense situation. An AR is preferable, but the AK is heck of a lot better than nothing.

Neither is usable as a carry weapon, and for home defense, the general recommendation is a 20-gauge pump-action shotgun.

You should look up “Sniper’s Wonderland”; there are dozens of versions.

And they’re all more or less hilarious.

(On the AK thing, a bolt-action or the like is usually preferable for hunting, but an AK mostly works*. If one must have one weapon for both home defense and hunting medium game, an AK is a decent choice.

Ideally, though, specialized tools for each job; a carbine can be a little unwieldy indoors unless you have – in the US context – tax stamps for an SBR.

* Depends on what you’re hunting, where; some people do things like elk at 300 yards, where an AK is utterly inappropriate. Whitetail at under 100, no worries.)
