*insert metaphor here*

Holy cow — I’ve just discovered that my current Photoshop will import video and snip it into frames for export as animated .gif. That’s…well, if you can’t see how unspeakably exciting that is, I feel sorry for you. I’m having fun, fun, fun.

Well, fun, fun, drudgery, fun. Even a little bitty animation like this runs to 110 frames and takes considerable fussing and fluffing.

This is a clip from an 1897 Edison film called Seminary Girls. In the full version, the headmistress comes in and gives them all hell. Please note, the girl with the longest hair — the one who has her back to us most of the time — is smoking a cigarette. Nice touch.

You can find the whole thing at archive.org (and you can lose whole days of your life to archive.org, fair warning).

I am just having fun imagining what a Tesla film of girls having a pillowfight would have looked like…

I remember seeing a clip of some silly American twirling a pistol in front of his web cam ..

He had a funny hat on, lost control of the weapon, and discharged the pistol in his face.

Anyone seen that?

Should be an Sweasel Darwin Award competition!!!

Oh, I do love archive.org…also love google books for the same reason, you can find all sorts of interesting old books there. Recently found an old Charles Dodgson(Lewis Carroll) book arguing for the continued use of Euclid in English schools.

Dodgson arguing for moar Euclid? Makes sense. He was a mathematician and logician, after all.

The long-haired smoker is very graceful, but she’s taking a big chance putting the cig in her mouth with all those pillows flailing about. “Chewing tobacco” with a cherry on top.

Sigh. I wish you’d put a pause button on animated .gifs you use as posts (is it even /possible/ to add a pause button?); their charm deteriorates rapidly after about the 50th repetition. 🙂

You’ll be interested to know, Sweasel, that your animation semi-froze my new ipad. The gif started great, but then with your bandwidth and Richard Branson’s super speed broadband, your gif was able to be manipulated almost like a freeze frame sequence. I played with that too much, looking for the girl with the fag, and the whole ipad froze up. VERY cool!

Hm. It isn’t all that challenging a .gif, GIL. The really high quality ones — the ones they call cinematographs — are much bigger and more processor-intense.

Ha–hope you don’t take it as a criticism, Sweas. I find it fascinating to have one of the best Broadband systems in the world–and yet it STILL has problems. Same goes for WP. As fast and as instant as they want our world to be, there are still issues–and the juice boxers get paid a lot of money to sit and do the boring stuff behind the scenes. It’s good–and it’s getting better. I like that.

It’s pretty easy to do a pause button for GIF. Have two divs one on top of the other, with display: none for one and block or inline-block for the other. Then a JavaScript onclick handler to toggle one to the other. GIF animation is suspended if its container element is hidden so it’s not even using any CPU.

A lot of females derive vicarious entertainment by searching for weasel war dance.

Now it’s been proven that there are weasels entertaining themselves by watching females and their bizarre choreography that defies prompt comprehension.

Not anything you would not have known already for a while, with a possible exception of tightening your opsec which is an advice we could all use.

Beware: more than one link in a comment is apt to earn you a trip to the spam filter, where you will remain -- cold, frightened and alone -- until I remember to clean the trap. But, hey, without Akismet, we'd be up to our asses in...well, ass porn, mostly.
